Reliance Jio has already captured the cellular market in India, with dirt cheap 4G plans, free domestic VoLTE calls to any phone number in India. Today, a new update has revealed a bit about Jio’s next big venture- Reliance Jio Giga Fiber. Reliance Jio Giga Fiber was announced almost a year back, in July 2018, and since then the company is testing it across a few cities. Some reports claimed that Reliance Jio Giga Fiber will be able to provide speeds as high as 1 Gbps, allowing users to stream Ultra HD Content, play games in VR and much more.
Today, it was reported by Livemint that Reliance Jio Giga Fiber will offer broadband service along with landline and TV combo service for as low as Rs. 600 per month, which is less than $10. Also, Jio Giga Fiber will offer additional facilities like the ability to connect up to 40 devices to a smart home network. However, for additional facilities, the customers will have to pay up to Rs. 1000 or $14 per month. These are some of the facts that are shared by someone who is aware of the developments, however, the company has kept its mouth shut regarding its plans.
Reliance Jio Giga Fiber – Pricing & Other Details
For calling, there will be no charges for the landline and Jio will add provide IPTV services instead of conventional DTH services, which means that everything will be solely dependant on the internet. The person said, “All these offerings will be powered through an ONT (Optical Network Terminal) box router which can connect 40-45 devices such as mobile phones, smart TVs, laptops, tablets and a range of smart devices.” He further added, “While the triple combo, which will offer 600 channels with seven-day catch-up option, landline, and 100 Mbps broadband will be priced ₹600 a month, the tariff for adding other smart home services may cost extra and depending on the plan, the tariff could go up to ₹1,000 a month.”
This means that the minimum speed that Jio is planning to provide will be 100 Mbps and at this kind of speed, CCTV footage can be stored in the cloud and can be accessed from any device. Right now, some residents in cities like New Delhi and Mumbai are already enjoying 100 GB of data a month at a speed of 100 MBps for free, after they paid the one time deposit worth Rs. 4500 for the proprietary router.
It is said that Reliance Jio will add telephone and television services to broadband within the next three months again, disrupting the wired broadband service sector in India, which is still very much under-penetrated because of lack of low-cost ISPs everywhere, and the lack of players in the market that focus on multiple segments.
For example, I pay Rs. 1199 each month only for broadband, that too has a speed of just 8MBps. I also have a landline for which some customers may need to pay up to Rs. 200, but state-owned BSNL demolished the monthly tariff for a landline for those customers who are on this particular plan. I don’t watch TV, but if I did, I have seen that for all the channels of my choice, I would have to pay around Rs. 400 to Tata Sky, so clearly Jio is way ahead of other ISPs and DTH Service providers in India, and if Jio Giga Fiber really provides 100 Mbps speed, along with free calling via landline and TV channels, it would be a steal deal!
